Fixing Cracked Basement Floors

Fixing Cracked Basement Floors

The one thing that virtually all basement floors have in common is that they are made of concrete, and concrete cracks. This particularly happens when concrete is exposed to damp conditions which are almost unavoidable in a basement. So having said that, having a cracked basement floor is just a fact of life, what is the best way of going about repairing them?

Shallow cracks and damaged areas can be filled quite easily with all-purpose made filler available from your local home improvement store. Just make sure that you don’t ignore cracks in your basement floor and fix them as soon as you can. They will not mend themselves and will only get worse over time. If you don’t want to find yourself with a large bill for the complete replacement of the floor it is best to tackle any cracks as soon as you see them.

How To Fix Cracks in Basement Floors

Usually it is a fairly simple job to fix damaged basement floors and you can do it yourself without professional help using the correct materials and basement floor repair kitequipment. Be sure to clean the area that needs patching thoroughly and remove any loose material in the cracks. Should the cracks go deep or if there are pits and holes in the floor, you will probably need more than filler.

Your local home improvement store should also stock a special latex leveling compound that you can use to give a new level topcoat to the whole floor. This material does take a while to dry, but once it is dry you can sand and paint it, or cover it with whatever flooring you choose. Using a latex leveler over the entire floor will make a much more water resistant and durable finish than just filling the cracks, and put you one step closer to a waterproof basement.

However, before you go ahead with this you might like to get some quotes from professionals as having someone repair the floor for you would be much less stressful and considerably less work for you, and may not prove a great deal more expensive when all is said and done.
